Case study

LLB Law student — Elizabeth Joel

Elizabeth is studying LLB Law at Salford Business School, part of the University of Salford. After graduation she plans to complete a Bar course to become a barrister

Why did you choose this university?

Salford is located close to my home, and I wanted to attend a university in or close to the city due to accessibility. The university also offered the course that I wanted to study, so it ticked all the boxes.

How is the course structured and assessed?

Each year of the LLB you study six modules, although this can change in your final year depending on the modules you choose. You get the option to select a few modules of interest in your second and third year.

The modules are focused on different areas of law, such as land law, criminal law and media law, among others.

They are assessed in a variety of ways and this can include coursework and practicing multiple choice questions, as well as problem-solution focused exams, essays and presentations.

What's your university experience been like so far?

It has been amazing. I have had many opportunities to challenge myself, meet new people, build my confidence, network with industry professionals, and engage in society competitions.

What support have you received from the university?

I have received careers support with my CV. Industry support has been embedded into my course, which includes assistance with building a LinkedIn profile, attending interviews, self-reflection, and employability.

I have also received support with my writing skills through the university's Blackboard Learn site.

How have you managed your finances as a student?

I have done this through budgeting. I created a list of all my expenses, including monthly outgoings, and made plans based on how much I would spend each month, and even on a week-by-week basis. This has given me stability, while also allowing me to be flexible, in case I had an unexpected expense.

Cooking my own meals and making packed lunches has also helped me because I've been able to predict how much money I need to spend on food each week.

Briefly tell us about your plans for after graduation.

After graduation, I plan to go to law school to study a Bar course, with the goal of becoming a barrister. I also plan to gain a Masters degree in the field.

What tips would you give to others thinking about going to university?

  • Attend open days and events before joining a university. This will give you a feel for what life would be like if you chose to study there.
  • Choose the right course. It needs to be something you would enjoy but, most importantly, provides graduate opportunities when you finish your studies.
  • Prepare your mind to do your best from the very beginning. You need to be ready for all the challenges you'll face during your time at university. Remember that support is always available should you need it.
