PGCE student — Elle Griffiths
After achieving the BA Physical Education and School Sport at Edge Hill University, Elle chose to stay on and complete the PGCE Secondary Physical Education with QTS (11-16)
Why did you decide to pursue a postgraduate course at Edge Hill?
I have always wanted to become a physical education (PE) teacher. Continuing my education through a postgraduate course was the next stepping stone to my dream career. My favourite thing about my degree subject is expressing my passion for sports, physical activity, and education.
The campus was one of the main reasons I chose to study at Edge Hill. Everything you will ever need is all in one place, the accommodation is fantastic, and having everything on your doorstep really made my university experience the best I could have asked for.
What was the application process like?
The application process began on the GOV.UK website. I uploaded my personal statement and selected the institutions I wanted to apply for.
Despite being nervous, the interview day at Edge Hill was incredible, and the staff made me feel at ease from the offset. There was so much pressure on this one, and I just wanted to make sure I delivered the best quality lesson and interview responses I could. Receiving the offer text and email was the most rewarding feeling.
Tell us a bit about the course and what it involves.
My PGCE typically involves spending time on campus, working on everything from pedagogies to participating in practical sessions in numerous sports.
The course also entails intensive training and practice (ITaP) weeks, where we focus on one topic, such as adaptive teaching. Our year is also split into two placements.
While on placement, we have weekly lecturers and seminars, each focusing on different curriculum elements. Upon completing both placements, you complete a viva with lecturers, reflecting on your experiences and looking ahead to your next steps.
What are the top three skills you have gained from your studies?
- academic writing
- practical application of teaching styles and strategies
- confidence in myself.
What do you hope to do when you graduate?
My undergraduate and postgraduate degrees have significantly enhanced my knowledge of sports, pedagogies, and teaching requirements, preparing me for the world of teaching.
I am weighing up many different options for what to do next. These range from becoming a full-time secondary PE teacher in the UK or UAE (United Arab Emirates) to starting a graduate teaching assistant (GTA) PhD position or even enrolling on an MRes (Master of Research).
What tips would you give to others choosing a Masters degree?
Research the course thoroughly and know exactly what is expected of you. Speak to people who have completed the course previously. Be sure to give 100% to all assignments. Ask for support if you need anything - someone will always have an answer to your question.
