Solent offers a range of MA, MSc, MRes, LLM and MBA courses, covering everything from the creative industries, artificial intelligence, business and social sciences to maritime and sport. Teaching Excellence Framework – rated Gold

Our focus on practical teaching and securing employment opportunities for students are just two of the reasons we were rated gold in the latest Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) from the government Office for Students. TEF recognises excellence in teaching, learning and achieving positive outcomes for students. -Gold recognises the typically outstanding experience, outcomes and overall journey of Solent’s learning community, and we are one of only a handful of universities in the UK to receive all three.

Research

At Solent, we aim to undertake innovative research that addresses some of today’s most pressing issues and has a wide-ranging and significant impact on our local communites. This research enriches the learning experience of our students and positively benefits the lives of those in our local, national, and international communities.

Overall, in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, 34% of Solent’s research was assessed as world-leading and internationally excellent, and 50% of our research outputs were rated as world-leading and internationally excellent.

Work-ready, future-ready, world-ready

With a focus on connecting students to work experience and opportunities, students at Solent are prepped for success in their careers from day one. At Solent Careers, students receive bespoke advice on opportunities for them both during and after study, while at Solent Creatives and Solent Productions – on-campus enterprises – learners are invited to get hands-on experience in their chosen field to boost their CVs and connect with employers.

Solent’s careers focus is integrated into every course, particularly at master’s level. With a unique offering across each of our nine departments, modules include work-placement opportunities, briefs and projects based on real-world challenges, practical assignments, assessments and, networking with industry, alongside the traditional aspects of higher education you will already be familiar with.

Industry-standard facilities

To give students a head-start, Solent regularly invests in the latest facilities and technology across all fields.

As lead partner of the South Coast Institute of Technology, Solent is currently building a state-of-the-art facility for maritime, engineering and technology where students are invited to embrace the most sought-after skills using the latest innovations.

The University’s Departments of Art and Music and Film and Media offer a wide range of industry-standard facilities, including photography and music studios, and the latest innovation in film – a Virtual Production Stage (VPS). Solent boasts one of the only VPS’ - which is used in the making of Hollywood blockbusters such as The Batman – available in the country for teaching, helping students to get ahead with unique experience.

For burgeoning media and broadcast professionals, Solent’s extensive production equipment includes studio facilities and edit suites, three green screen TV studios, and a range of radio and music production facilities.

When it comes to sport, Solent’s stunning Sports Complex – built as part of a £100m campus redevelopment in 2019 – is available for students, staff and the local community. Across four floors, state-of-the-art equipment is on hand for interactive teaching and personal use.

Highlights include two sports halls; a sector-leading BASES-accredited physiology laboratory; three gyms with flexible and affordable memberships; a biomechanics lab; and a physical rehabilitation room.

The Spark – a £33m state-of-the-art building placed at the heart of Solent’s campus – is home to the Department of Business and Law, and combines interactive teaching spaces with lecture theatres , as well as an awe-inspiring atrium with places to study and socialise.

For students looking to carve out a career in health and nursing, Solent’s Human Health Labs offer simulated learning experiences in environments that replicate real-life hospital wardsh. With access to specialist equipment, including an Anatomage table, learners receive a first-class education which helps them to hit the ground running when they graduate.
