About Royal Town Planning Institute

It’s about people and place

Planners are passionate about people and place. They tackle the climate and nature emergencies. They consider how land is used and protected, and have to balance competing interests and needs. They think about where homes and hospitals, shops and schools should be built, sustainably and inclusively. They might work locally, such as working on extensions to people’s homes, or on bigger, national, projects, such as the rail network.

Planning concerns all of us, and brings together local community groups, members of the public, politicians, business leaders, interest groups, architects, ecologists, and others.

Planners make a difference to people’s lives, changing the world locally, nationally and internationally.

The Royal Town Planning Institute

We’re the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), and we’ve been championing planning and planners since 1914. We’re the professional membership organisation for Chartered Town Planners, and that means that we set and maintain professional standards for planners, supporting them to be the very best. We have over 27,000 members in 88 countries.

We are also the voice of the planning profession, engaging with governments, international bodies, interest groups and others to promote responsible and sustainable development and use of space and place.

Above all, we support our members to create inclusive, healthy and prosperous places for everyone. We are committed to a diverse and inclusive profession, and we need you.

Ready to consider a career in planning?

Planning spans a variety of areas. If you are looking at choosing your school subjects, geography is a great place to start, but planning encompasses other subjects, such as sciences, technology, history, sociology, politics, modern studies, citizenship, design, economics, and other subjects.

The RTPI can then support you into a planning career and Chartered membership of the Institute in a number of ways. You might consider university study and obtain an RTPI-accredited degree at one of our 33 accredited Planning Schools, or you might prefer to gain professional work experience and study at the same time on a Chartered Town Planner degree apprenticeship in England. If study isn’t for you, you could gain planning work experience over a number of years to attain Chartered Town Planner status via our experienced route. You could also consider the level 4 Town Planning Assistant apprenticeship in England.

To find about more about planning, please take a look at the About Planning pages of our website. Find out more about RTPI membership here.
